I begin to realize that a big and important side of daring to get your dreams (and I guess being overall happier too) comes in hand with learning to say "Yes". Not in that submitted way that tries to please everybody by sacrificing your own patience, but learning to say "Yes" even when our best and old instincts used to play on the safe side of the street scream, with all their might, a big red "NO!". I've been told that's just ego, trying to protect you from new experiences and infinite potential ways that could go wrong. But I'm becoming aware of that balance. Neither extreme is good, that we know. But still.
In this moment of my life, I realize I'm starting to say "yes" to a lotta things that I probably would've avoided before, scared of what could go wrong. I said "yes" to a job that holds an enormous responsibility without being 100% sure that I can do it. I said "yes" to a small personal artistic project that's gonna take me the better part of lots of monts, but which represents a nice kick in the ass to my old "white canvas fear". I say "yes" to friends who come to me with new and bizarre plans that I'm not always keen on doing, but end up becoming good experiences. And finally, I said "yes" to 2 travelers who contacted me through CouchSurfing asking me if I would host them for a couple of days.
A person who clutches that fake sensation of safety that is born out of saying "no" would tell me that I'm demented for giving the keys to my house to two complete strangers. And they may be right. They could be 2 crazed globetrotters who go around killing people in their apartments. But that's the fun thing. What's the point of having Life pass and avoiding that danger, when everything is so freaking fragile anyway? How much can you lose and how much can you win? I guess that's an answer that each of us have to sort out on or own. I guess that it's just perspective as well. I can choose fear and believe that everybody out there is gonna try and take advantage of me, or I can choose trust and believe that any new experience is always positive, even more when I can open my head further in the process and find someone who bears a lesson I need to learn
Who knows what you can find in any part of the way? Curiosity. That's kinda the point.

008: Lo que sé sobre decir "Sí"
Empiezo a darme cuenta que una grande e importante parte de animarse a cumplir un sueño (y supongo que ser más feliz en general) viene de la mano de aprender a decir "Sí". No en el sentido complaciente que busca conformar a todo el mundo a expensas de la paciencia propia, sino el aprender a decir "Sí" incluso cuando nuestros mejores y viejos instintos acostumbrados a jugar en el lado seguro de la calle gritan, con todas sus fuerzas, un rotundo y rojo "NO!". Me han dicho que se trata del ego, buscando protegerte de nuevas experiencias y un potencial infinito de cosas que podrían salir mal. Pero estoy empezando a percibir ese balance. Ningún extremo es bueno, eso lo sabemos. Pero aún´así.
En este momento de mi vida, me doy cuenta que estoy empezando a decirle "sí" a muchas cosas que probablemente antes hubiera evitado por miedo a lo que pueda salir mal. Le dije que "sí" a una oferta de trabajo con una enorme responsabilidad sin estar seguro en un 100% de estar preparado para ello. Le dije que "sí" a un proyectito propio de actividad artística que va a tomarme la mayor parte de muchos meses, pero que representa una fuerte patada en el culo a mi miedo al lienzo en blanco. Le digo que "sí" a los amigos que me proponen planes para los cuales no siempre tengo ganas o encuentro atractivos pero que siempre terminan siendo buenas experiencias. Y finalmente, le dije que "sí" a 2 viajeros que me contactaron por CouchSurfing preguntándome si podían hospedarse en casa un par de días.
Una persona aferrada a la falsa sensación de seguridad que genera el decir "no" me diría que soy un demente, que cómo voy a darle las llaves de mi casa a dos completos extraños. Y puede que tengan razón. Podrían ser 2 desquiciados trotamundos que van por la vida asesinando gente en sus departamentos. Pero ahí está justamente la gracia. Qué sentido tiene el pasarnos la vida evitando ese peligro, cuando todo es tan jodidamente frágil? Qué podés perder y qué podés ganar? Supongo que es una evaluación que cada uno debe hacer en soledad. Supongo también que es cuestión de perspectiva. Puedo elegir temer y creer que todos en el mundo van a querer aprovecharse de mí, o puedo elegir confiar y creer que cualquier experiencia nueva siempre es positiva, más aún cuando puedo abrir aún más mi cabeza en el proceso y encontrarme con alguien que me trae una lección que necesito aprender.
Quién sabe lo que podés encontrarte en cualquier punto del camino? Curiosidad. Ese es un poco el punto.
You know, it's funny. I started this blog intending to turn it into some kind of journal that narrated all my last year in Buenos Aires and that served to tell the -here's hopin'- extraordinary story of how I achieved my dream. But in less than 6 entries it became something else. Far from being a personal, warm space, it became a kind of... some US serie's character talking in off about different topics. And that's not the intention. There's already too many things like that. Let's leave it to people like Mary Alice Young or Meredith Grey, who do a pretty good job about it too.
No, the idea was that this be about me. Not about the series I wish my life was, not about what I guess that those who read this believe they want to read. Me. I, like every other human being on this planet, am unique. And only being me is it that I can hope to be more than a face in the crowd. I don't know why we're so inclined to believe that what we have to offer isn't wort it. That it won't be good enough, or enterteining or moving enough. What happened to us at some point in history that made personal distrust a by default thought? We artists struggle strongly with this concept. When any idea occurs to us, we immediately think about all the people who did something similar before us and all the people that could, quite probably, do it better. We never think about what WE can add to it. Instead, we distract ourselves with details and excuses, or we summon someone else's work, seeking some kind of fake security that never lasts, because there's nothing underneath it to support it. But not anymore.
So today, my dear friends, I propose a change of ways. We'll stop writing first in English, we'll do it first on our own language. We'll expose, we'll tell, we'll share, and we'll leave something behind so that me, my friends, my children or any average Joe can read these articles some day and think: "If this guy could, why can't I?". And maybe that's the real reason why it's so important to be yourself. Because like that we can truly ever live, and only like that we can leave a legacy behind so others can benefit from what we found in our paths. When you help yourself, you're always helping everyone else.

007: Lo que sé sobre cambiar la manera
Saben, es curioso. Empecé este blog con la intención de convertirlo en una especie de bitácora, de diario que fuera retratando todo mi último año en Buenos Aires y que sirva para contar la -esperemos- extraordinaria historia de cómo logré mi sueño. Pero en menos de 6 entradas se volvió algo distinto a eso. Lejos de ser un espacio personal y cálido, se volvió una especie de... personaje de serie yankee hablando en voz en off sobre diferentes temas. Y no es la intención. Ya existen demasiadas cosas así. Dejemosle esas revelaciones a gente como Mary Alice Young o Meredith Grey, que bastante bien lo hacen.
No, la idea era que esto fuera sobre mí. No sobre la serie que me gustaría que mi vida fuera, no sobre lo que yo supongo que creen los que lo lean que quieren leer. Yo. Yo, como todos los seres humanos de este planeta, soy único. Y es sólo siendo yo mismo que puedo llegar a intentar resaltar entre la multitud. No sé por qué estamos tan entregados a pensar que lo que tenemos para ofrecer no vale la pena. Que no va a ser lo suficientemente bueno, o lo suficientemente entretenido, o conmovedor. Qué nos pasó en algún momento que hizo que el pensamiento por defecto sea la desconfianza hacia nosotros mismos. Los artistas luchamos fuertemente con este sentimiento. Ante cualquier idea que se nos ocurre, inmediatamente pensamos en todas las personas que hicieron algo similar y todas las personas que podrían, muy posiblemente, hacerlo mejor que nosotros. Nunca se nos ocurre pensar en lo que NOSOTROS podemos aportar. En vez, nos distraemos con detalles y excusas, o imitamos el trabajo de otros, buscando un tipo de seguridad falsa y que no dura, porque no hay nada por debajo para sostenerla. Pero ya no más.
Así que hoy, queridos amigos y amigas, propongo un cambio de manera. Vamos a dejar de escribir primero en Inglés, vamos a hacerlo primero en nuestro propio idioma. Vamos a exponer, vamos a contar, vamos a compartir, y vamos a dejar algo detrás para que yo, mis amigos, mis hijos o cualquier hijo de vecino pueda leer estos artículos algún día y pensar: "Si este chico pudo, ¿por qué yo no?". Y tal vez esa es la razón de por qué es tan importante ser uno mismo. Porque así podemos vivir de verdad y sólo así podemos dejar un legado para que otros se beneficien de lo que encontramos en nuestros caminos. Al ayudarte a vos mismo, ayudás a todo el mundo.

006: What I know about the not fun parts of dreaming
You can ask anyone who knows me to say 3 words about my relationship with my father, and they'd all probably answer the same things: Troublesome, awkward, complicated. I've spent quite a long part of my childhood and teen years asking myself how can I have been born from this man who is so different from me. How can half of my genes come from such a centered, grounded and with a vision for business person. How was is possible that I saw the world through possibilities, simplicities and a blind faith in chance and fate, when one of the two persons who raised me saw it through analysis, facts and physics.
In the later years, we slowly started to realize that we're not so different after all. Curiously, or not that curiously even, physical distance started to bring us closer together. Without living under the same roof, maybe loving each other but from afar, we began to talk and communicate in a different way. I grew up, became confident and comfortable in the person I'm becoming. He grew old, maybe capitalizing his life's experience and starting to understand more subtle truths and wisdom. So we finally, finally began to really talk.
But, as the old saying goes, the more things change, the more they stay the same. So everynow and then the old issues, forgotten mistakes from the past or familiar hardships get the best of us, and we fight, we scream, I decide there's just no talking to this man and I immeadiatelly begin to fantasize about how I am NOT mentioning him in the Acknowledgements page of my first book. Of course that's just the heat of the moment and don't really mean that, but still.
A couple of days ago, he was giving me a ride home after a family dinner. Lots of things had been discussed and told in a surprisingly pleasant evening. One of those things, my Irish and World Traveling Dream. Suddenly, he turned the radio down and asked me how was I planning on reacting if, when I was there, one of my clients didn't pay me. Or how would I manage my money, or through which bank. How much did the plane tickets cost. Where would I live. How much money should I need to gather. Is a year long enough to prepare for this? You get the idea. Of course, I was upset. What was he trying to do with all these questions? How am I supposed to know any of those answers? I can't think of those details yet, I'm graduating next summer and living alone and working and still trying to figure out if I like myself as much as I want. Money? Banks? Accounting? You kidding me pops?
But then I thought, I need to start making myself all these questions. I need to prepare for what's coming. Is a year enough? Maybe not, but more the reason to start right way, isnt it? Why am I not doing it already? If I'm so sure of it, if it's the only thing that my heart yearns for, then why don't I even know the plane ticket's cost? Why haven't I already start designing a system? Or checked the visa conditions? Do I really want this!?
And in a sudden, clear moment, I understood the main difference between my father and me. Unlike me, he is not afraid of the not fun parts of dreaming. He has the ability to dream, just like me. But he can see the boring parts, the technical side, not only the daydreaming and wonderful things that can happen, but also the bad chances, the fact that people will try and abuse my confidence and that passports get lost and Internet is not always reliable and that travel is dangerous in a way.
I wasn't seeing any of this, probably out of fear of what I would find out. What if the ticket is too expensive? What if I need more money than I can gather? And so, I understood the lesson:
I can't be a good dreamer if I'm not willing to face all the aspects of the dream itself. The fun and the not fun. Kinda hard to believe that this man I was so sure knew nothing about dreaming is the one who made me realize this.

006: Lo que sé sobre la parte aburrida de soñar
Podés pedirle a cualquiera que me conozca que te diga 3 palabras sobre mi relación con mi padre, y probablemente todos respondan las mismas cosas: Problemática, incómoda, complicada. Pasé un largo tiempo de mi infancia y adolesencia preguntándome cómo pude aber nacido de este hombre que es tan distinto a mí. Como pueden la mitad de mis genes provenir de una persona tan centrada, bajada a tierra y con visión para los negocios. Cómo es posible que yo vea el mundo a través de posibilidades, simplicidades y fé ciega en chances y destino, cuando una de las dos personas que me criaron lo ven a través del análisis, los hechos y la física.
En los años siguientes, lentamente empezamos a darnos cuenta de que no somos tan diferentes después de todo. Curiosamente, o no tanto incluso, la distancia física nos empezó a acercar. Sin vivir bajo el mismo techo, tal vez queriéndonos desde lejos, empezamos a hablar y comunicarnos en una forma diferente. Yo crecí, me volví confiado y cómodo con la persona en la que me estoy transformando. Él envejeció, tal vez capitalizando la experiencia de su vida y empezando a entender verdades y sabidurías más sutiles. Y entonces finalmente, finalmente empezamos a hablar.
Pero como dice el dicho, cuanto más cambian las cosas más siguen igual. Así que cada tanto los problemas viejos, los errores olvidados de viejas asperezas familiares nos superan, y peleamos, gritamos, decido que no hay forma de hablar con este hombre e inmediatamente empiezo a fantasear sobre como NO lo voy a mencionar en la parte de Agradecimientos de mi primer libro. Por supuesto que eso es solo el calor del momento y no es en serio, pero aún así.
Un par de días atrás, me estaba llevando a casa después de una cena familiar. Muchas cosas se discutieron y dijeron en una sorprendentemente placentera noche. Una de ellas, mi Sueño de Viaje Irlandés y por el Mundo. De repente, bajó la radio y me preguntó cómo planeaba reaccionar si, estando allá, uno de mis clientes no me pagaba. O como manejaría la economía, o a través de qué banco. Cuanto cuestan los pasajes? Donde voy a vivir. Cuánto dinero necesito juntar. Es un año el tiempo suficiente para prepararse para esto? Se entiende. Por supuesto, me fastidié. Qué estaba intentando hacerme con todas estas preguntas? Cómo se supone que sepa sus respuestas? No puedo pensar en esos detalles todavía, me gradúo el próximo verano y vivo solo y trabajo y aún estoy tratando entender si me gusto a mí mismo tanto como me gustaría. Plata? Bancos? Cuentas? Me estás jodiendo pá?
Pero entonces pensé, necesito empezar a hacerme estas preguntas. Necesito prepararme para lo que se viene. Es un año suficiente? Tal vez no, pero más razón para empezar enseguida, verdad? Por que no lo estoy haciendo? Si estoy tan seguro de que eso, de que es lo único por lo que mi corazón late, entocnes por qué nisiquiera sé cuanto cuesta un pasaje? Por qué aún no empecé a armar un sistema? O chequeado las condiciones de visados? Realmente quiero esto!?
Y en un repentino, claro momento, entendí la principal diferencia entre mi padre y yo. A diferencia de mí, a él no le asustan las partes aburridas de soñar. Tiene la habilidad de hacerlo, como yo. Pero puede ver las partes engorrosas, el lado técnico, no sólo la ilusión y las cosas maravillosas que pueden ocurrir, pero también las cosas malas, el hecho de que la gente va a tratar de abusar de mi confianza y que los pasaportes se pierden y que uno siempre puede contar con Internet y que viajar es realmente peligroso en cierto sentido.
No estaba viendo nada de esto, probablemente por miedo a lo que averiguara. Y si los pasajes son demasiado caros? Y si la plata que necesito es más de la que puedo juntar? Y entonces, entendí la lección:
No puedo ser un buen soñador si no estoy dispuesto a enfrentar todos los aspectos del sueño en sí. Lo divertido y lo aburrido. Es un poco difícil de creer que este hombre que yo estaba seguro no sabía nada sobre los sueños sea el que me enseña esto.
Gracias, papá. Y ahora, el trabajo comienza.

I've been thinking a lot lately about the things that I don't choose for my life. A kind of wisdom that seems to reach out to us only when we've been through things. Experience. When we're young, it's really easy to believe that everything that happens around us brings an un-seen opportunity. We're swiftly carried away into thinking that we have to hold on to any offer, any chance for something meaningful. So we seize those chances, we carpe the hell out of our diems and head on to it, guns-ablaze, ready for anything. Because what if we MISS it?
I used to live my life like this. Beating myself up whenever I rejected or missed out on something I wasn't even sure I wanted to begin with. But what if he was the right one for me? What if they had fun while I was at home reading a book? What if I regret not travelling there? What if, what if, what if.
Later in life, I have discovered, we learn to appreciate the subtle signs that point our way. We call it intuition, or instinct, or a hunch. We develop a system through which we filter the opportunities that come our way, and we learn to tell when we should catch it, when do we want to catch it, and what can you gain or lose if you do.
We learn to "not choose".
And this has a lot to do with the concept of responsibility for one's own life. I'm beggining to understand that life, each of our days, becomes only what we make of it. We have a god-like skill to trace a line in the sand, and say "Until here" to whatever is haunting us. Mondays can be a drag, a horrible day to live if you're in line for 5 whole days of boring work and boring studies and boring co-workers and boring bus trips. Or Mondays can be a beautiful fresh start for an amazing week where you make things happen and move closer to your dreams.
So yeah, sometimes a new road will open up. You'll meet someone, you'll be offered something, you'll have the opportunity to try something new. But the arrival of opportunity is not an obligation to welcome it. Not when it's out of fear of what we could be missing. We get so anxious about our What Ifs, that sometimes we say yes, even though we don't really want to go along. But we do it anyway, beacause of the inexistent possibility of missing something that could be great.
I've come now to believe in a more subtle kind of instinct. The voice that says "Not this time". Not out of cowardice, not out of fear of failure. But out of wisdom. A wisdom that arrives after tripping over and over the same stone once and again, until you finally, finally learn the lesson: Sometimes the roads not taken are the best roads of all.

005: Lo que sé sobre los caminos no tomados
"Mirarás calle arriba y calle abajo,
mirarás con cuidado.
Y sobre algunas pensarás "En esa dirección no elijo avanzar".

Estuve pensando mucho ultimamente en las cosas que no elijo para mi vida. Un tipo de sabiduría que parece alcanzarnos solo cuando atravesamos ciertas cosas. Experiencia. Cuando somos jóvenes, es muy fácil creer que todo lo que ocurre a nuestro alrededor va a traernos una oportunidad no vista. Somos delicadamente llevados a creer que debemos aferrarnos a cada ofrecimiento, cada chance de algo con significado. Y tomamos esas chances, carpeamos nuestros diems y avanzamos, armas tomadas, listos para todo. Porque y qué si nos lo perdemos?
Solía vivir mi vida así. Atormentándome cada vez que rechazaba o me perdía de algo que ni siquiera estaba seguro de querer. Pero y qué si él era el correcto para mí? Y qué si ellos se divirtieron mientras yo estaba en casa leyendo un libro? Y qué si me arrepiento de no viajar a ese lugar? Y qué, y qué, y qué.
Más tarde en la vida, descubrí, aprendemos a apreciar los signos sutiles que nos apuntan el camino. Lo llamamos intuición, o instinto, o corazonada. Desarrollamos un sistema a través del cual filtramos las oportunidades que nos llegan y aprendemos a identificar cuando tomarlas, cuando queremos tomarlas, y qué podemos ganar o perder si lo hacemos.
Aprendemos a "no elegir".
Y esto tiene mucho que ver con el concepto de responsabilidad por la vida propia. Estoy empezando a entender que la vida, cada día, se vuelve sólo lo que hacemos de él. Tenemos una habilidad divina de marcar una línea en la arena y decir "Hasta acá" a lo que sea que nos acosa. Los Lunes pueden ser un bajón, un día horrible que vivir si estás a la espera de 5 días enteros de trabajo aburrido y estudios aburridos y compañeros de trabajo aburridos y viajes aburridos en coletivo. O los Lunes pueden ser maravillosos comienzos de una excelente semana para hacer que las cosas ocurran y acercarte a tus sueños.
Así que sí, a veces se abren nuevos caminos. Conocés a alguien, o te ofrecen algo, o tenés una oportunidad de probar algo nuevo. Pero la llegada de una oportunidad no es una obligación de aprovecharla. No cuando lo hacemos por miedo a lo que podríamos perdernos si no. Nos volvemos tan ansiosos por nuestros Y Qués, que a veces decimos que sí, aunque no lo queramos realmente. Pero lo hacemos de todos modos, por la inexistente posibilidad de que nos estemos perdiendo algo que podría ser grandioso.
Empiezo a creer ahora en un tipo de instinto más sutil. La voz que dice "No esta vez". No por cobardía, o miedo al fracaso. Pero por sabiduría. Una sabiduría que llega solo después de tropezarte con la misma piedra una y otra vez, hasta que finalmente, finalmente aprendés la lección: A veces los caminos no tomados son los mejores caminos de todos.

As far as I can remember, and not even getting started with the whole relationships thing, the concept of "others" has always been upsetting. I mean, who are all these "other" people? Why do they have such power over me? Over my feelings, my fears, my wishes and hopes for the future?
We're social animals. That's been clear since day one. We love recognition. We rejoice when someone else acknowledges us. And we can't help it. That's why we get so easily addicted to Facebook likes and Twitter mentions. Someone has reacted to something we said or did! Hooray! Get those fireworks going! We exist!
Since the moment we're born, we need other people. We need our mother's milk and we need our family's verbal stimulation to imitate and we need friends in kindergarden so nobody thinks we're neurologically damaged and then we need best friends to confide our secrets to and eventually we need someone to give our hearts to, and co-workers, and people to go out with, and psychologists and doctors and teachers and employers and landlords. Life seems wired this way. We need the others.
Now then, what about the moment when we don't know exactly what do we need, but we still need someone to come along and deliver this thing to us? Society had us growing up believing that we're supposed to find our other halves. Somewhere out there, there's the promise of "that" person. And when we think we're ready for it, we just can't wait for that person to find us. Not only because we crave the feelings and the love, but also because people will think that there's something wrong with us if nobody is dating us after some time.
Thinking about this, I come to suspect that it has much to do with connection. Connection is everything. Our veins, and neurons, and cells, and everything that makes up our body, is connected. The Industrial Revolution. Wires and plugs and steel and conductors. Friendship and blood ties and promises and memories. We're all connected. Instant Messengers and smart phones, secrets and careful observation. Connection is the essence of Life itself. Socially, biologically, technologically, culturally.
So why do we weep when we feel disconnected? Maybe because deep down we begin to confirm one of humanity's most blunt and scary truths: That we are all, inevitably and utterly, alone. People will help you. They'll be there for you. They'll go out of their ways and show you a kindness that you didn't think was even possible. But at the end of the day, when it really comes down to it... it's a shark fight. Every man for it's own. You have to be able to provide for yourself, because no one will do it for you. Even if they want to. No one can.
Right now, I miss that connection. I miss the late-night hugs and the perfectly timed kiss. I miss the circumstance of Love. And I hold myself to past events and faces, looking for some relief or redemption.
But I think... I guess... I dare to say... that until I learn to not need that Love, not only in theory but in practice as well, I will not deserve it and it will not show itself to me. If I don't learn how to get along on my own, how to stop craving for some faceless, cosmically pre-assigned lover to come by and make everything better, then I'll never find him.
Maybe the real connection, the one that "lifts you up where you belong", can only manifest itself once you don't really need it. Maybe that's the real beauty of it. A couple of years ago, Chris McCandless wrote "HAPPINESS ONLY REAL WHEN SHARED". According to that statement, "happy" must come before "sharing". I must learn to be happy by myself, and only then I can take that happiness and upgrade it by sharing it with someone else. And then it will be real, pure, absolute, infinite. A real connection with another human being.

004: What I know about Others

Desde que puedo recordar, y sin siquiera empezar a hablar de las relaciones, el concepto de los "otros" siempre fue inquietante. Quiero decir, quienes son todas estas "otras" personas? Por qué tienen tanto poder sobre mí? Sobre mis emociones, mis miedos, mis deseos y esperanzas para el futuro?
Somos animales sociales. Eso estuvo claro desde el día uno. Amamos que nos reconozcan. Nos regocijamos cuando alguien nos reconoce como uno más. No podemos evitarlo. Es por eso que nos volvemos tan fácilmente adictos a los "Me Gusta" de Facebook y las menciones de Twitter. Alguien reaccionó a algo que dijimos o hicimos! Hurra! Lancen esos fuegos artificales! Existimos!
Desde el momento en que nacemos, necesitamos a los otros. Necesitamos la leche de nuestra madre y necesitamos la estimulación verbal de nuestra familia para imitar y necesitamos amigos en el jardín de infantes para que nadie crea que estamos neurológicamente dañados y después necesitamos mejores amigos para confiarles nuestros secretos y eventualmente necesitamos alguien a quien darle nuestro corazón, y compañeros de trabajo, y personas con las cuales salir, y psicólogos y doctores y profesores y empleadores y propietarios. La vida parece cableada de esta manera. Necesitamos a los otros.
Ahora bien, qué pasa con el momento en que no sabemos exactamente qué necesitamos, pero aún así queremos que alguien venga a entregarnoslo? La sociedad nos crió creyendo que debemoshallar a nuestra otra mitad. En algún lugar allá afuera, está la promesa de "esa" persona. Y cuando creemos que estamos listos, no podemos esperar a que nos encuentre. No solo porque deseamos los sentimientos y el amor, pero también por que la gente va a creer que hay algo mal en nosotros si nadie nos corteja después de cierto tiempo.
Pensando en esto, empiezo a sospechar que tiene mucho que ver con la conexión. La conexión lo es todo. Nuestras venas, neuronas, células y todo lo que conforma nuestro cuerpo, está conectado. La Revolución Industrial. Cables y enchufes y hierro y conductors. Amistad y lazos de sangre y promesas y memorias. Todos estamos conectados. Mensajeros instantáneos y smart phones, secretos y observación cuidadosa. La conexión es la esencia de la Vida. Socialmente, biológicamente, tecnológicamente, culturalmente.
Entonces por qué sufrimos cuando nos sentimos desconectados? Tal vez porque en lo profundo empezamos a confirmar una de las verdades más crudas y aterradoras de la humanidad: Que estamos todos, inevitable e innegablemente, solos. La gente the ayuda. Van a estar ahí para vos. Van a molestarse para ayudarte y mostrarte una amabilidad que ni creías posible. Pero al final del día, en definitiva... es una lucha de tiburones. Que se salve el que pueda. Tenés que ser capaz de proveerte a vos mismo, porque nadie lo va a hacer por vos. Incluso si quieren hacerlo. Nadie puede.
Ahora mismo, extraño esa conexión. Extraño los abrazos a la noche y los besos en el momento justo. Extraño la circunstancia del Amor. Y me aferro a eventos y caras pasadas, buscando un poco de alivio o redención.
Pero creo.. supongo... me animo a decir.. que hasta que no aprenda a no necesitar ese Amor, no solo en teoría sino en práctica también, no voy a merecerlo y no va a mostrarse ante mí. Si no aprendo como andar solo, como dejar de desear que algún amante sin cara y cósmicamente pre-asignado venga y haga que todo esté mejor, nunca lo voy a encontrar.
Tal vez la real conexión, la que te "eleva a donde perteneces", solo puede manifestarse una vez que no la necesitás realmente. Tal vez esa es la verdadera belleza de eso. Hace algunos años, Chris McCandless escribió "LA FELICIDAD SOLO ES REAL CUANDO SE COMPARTE". De acuerdo a ese enunciado, "feliz" debe venir antes de "compartir". Debo aprender a ser feliz por mí mismo, y solo entonces pueda tomar esa felicidad y actualizarla al compartirla con alguien más. Y entonces será real, pura, absoluta, infinita. Una verdadera conexión con otro ser humano.
003: What I know about Uncertainty (This blog entry is much better appreciated when listening to this track)
The first thing you need to know about Uncertainty is that she's a bitch. I mean, it's basic good-manners not to go around thrusting unexpected stuff on people. Even if it's good news, like a surprise birthday party. Its unsettling and startling. The second thing you need to know is that' she's also deeply, deeply desireable. You just have to learn how to love her.
Most people, they just hate the bare concept of Uncertainty. Let alone befriending her. Making her an ally (which, honestly, is the only logical thing to do when faced with any force you know you can't win against). No. Most people can't stand having her in their lives. She makes everything so messy. Nothing is reliable anymore, not when she's around. When faced with Uncertainty, we shiver, we fear, we... we reject it. We don't like surprises. Most people will tell you that they are happy with the way everything is. That they are okay. Even if they are miserable.
But when you face Uncertainty from a new perspective, you can begin to see her beauty. You can push yourself past the first layers of surprises and possibility, and you learn to appreciate it's wonderful, clever design. Because see, you gotta hand it to her, it's a pretty clever system. And it's simple: You just never know what's gonna happen. And if you can't fight that, if you can't help things happening, then why resist? Why?
I think it is possible to live your live without it. You can mold your life so accurately to reduce the Uncertainty factor as much as possible. But even then you're not excent. You're still vulnerable. Just like the rest of us. But what kind of life is that? Who'd want to live that way? Safely cradled in Safety's arms. Letting life go by.
It's certainly no walk in the park, welcoming her into your life and greet her as an old friend. But it's the difference between having bad news delivered by a complete stranger and having them delivered by a dear friend. The moment something unfolds and changes the way everything is, forever, irreplaceably, it's always better to have a loved one say it. Or even if it's good news. When something wonderful happens, it's not so cool to have it said by some random stranger, is it?
And you know, yes. Tomorrow the cat may die. Or he will never call you again. Or you'll finally figure your life out in the middle of a completely ordinary day, looking out of the window in the bus. Maybe you'll suddenly find yourself commited to something, or someone. Or perhaps a friend will betray you. Or who knows? You'll finally, finally get what you've been wishing for.
That's the point: Who knows? And if you can learn to appreciate the beauty in that, if you can just wrap your mind around the fact that chance and never-knowing can be tragically beautiful... then you start to understand. Surprises aren't so unsettling and fear seems to retreat.
Uncertainty is gonna manifest itself. We can't stop that. To the afraid and secure type, that will always be a worrysome thing. To the wild and free, that will always be a thrill and a reason to wake up from bed every morning.
I'm just getting to know her. I'm just getting to letting her be and do her thing. I'm just along for the ride. All I can do is wish for her to deliver what will give my heart it's content. And when she doesn't, when she gets moody and gives me a hard time... well, I guess I'll just have to push through it and remember that it isn't easy for her either. But I gotta learn somehow, right? I gotta happen. I gotta be faced with problems and compromises, so I can grow. Just like a severe but extremely loving mother, Uncertainty won't stay still while you do nothing with your life. She'll make you understand. She'll help you grow. Even if it hurts more her than you, she'll do it.
And for that, we should be grateful.
003: Lo que sé sobre la Incertidumbre (Este posteo se disfruta más escuchando este tema)
Lo primero que necesitás que saber sobre la Incertidumbre es que es una zorra. Quiero decir, es un buen modal básico el no ir por ahí arrojándole cosas inesperadas a la gente. Incluso si son buenas noticias, como una fiesta de cumpleaños sorpresa. Es desconcertante. La segunda cosa que necesitás saber es que también profundamente deseable. Sólo tenes que aprender cómo quererla.
La mayoría de la gente odia el mero concepto de Incertidumbre. Ni hablar de hacer amigos. O hacerla una aliada (lo que, francamente, es lo único lógico que hacer al enfrentarse a una fuerza que sabés que no podes vencer). No. La mayoría de la gente no pueden ni aguantar tenerla en sus vidas. Hace que todo se enriede. No se puede depender en nada nunca más, no cuando ella está cerca. Cuando nos enfrentamos a la Incertidumbre, temblamos, tememos.. la rechazamos. No nos gustan las sorpresas. La mayoría de la gente te dirá que están felices con la forma en la que va todo. Que las cosas están bien. Incluso si son miserables.
Pero cuando enfrentas a la Incertidumbre desde una nueva perspectiva, empezás a ver su belleza. Podés empujar más allá de las primeras capas de sorpresas y posibilidad, y aprendés a apreciar su maravilloso e ingenioso diseño. Porque, ves, hay que admitírselo, es un sistema muy ingenioso. Y es simple: Nunca sabés lo que va a pasar. Y si no podés combatir eso, si no podés evitar que las cosas sucedan, por qué resistirse? Por qué?
Creo que es posible vivir tu vida sin ella. Podés moldear tu vida tan precisamente que reduzcas el factor de Incertidumbre al mínimo. Pero incluso así no estás exento. Seguís siendo vulnerable. Igual que el resto de nosotros. Pero qué clase de vida es esa? Quien querría vivir así? Mecido seguramente en los brazos de la Seguridad. Dejando que la vida pase.
No es que sea un paseo por el parque, bienvenirla en tu vida y saludarla como a una vieja amiga. Pero es la diferencia entre que te diga malas noticias un completo extraño o que te las diga tu mejor amigo. El momento en que algo se desvela y cambia todo, para siempre, irremplazablemente, siempre es mejor que te lo diga alguien a quien querés. O incluso si son buenas noticias. Cuando pasa algo maravilloso, no está tan bueno que te lo diga un extraño cualquiera, no?
Y sabés, sí. Mañana puede morir el gato. O él no te va a llamar nunca más. O tal vez finalmente entendés tu vida en el medio de un día completamente ordinario, mirando por la ventana del colectivo. Tal vez de repente te encontrás comprometido a algo, o alguien. O a lo mejor un amigo te traiciona. O quien sabe? Puede ser que finalmente, finalmente obtengas lo que tanto querías.
Ese es el punto: Quien sabe? Y si podés aprender a apreciar la belleza en eso, si podés envolver tu mente alrededor del hecho de que las chances y el no saber pueden ser trágicamente hermosos... entonces empezás a entender. Las sorpresas no son tan desconcertantes, y el miedo parece retraerse.
La Incertidumbre va a manifestarse. No podemos detenerlo. Para los asegurados y asustados, eso siempre va a ser una cosa preocupante. Para los libres y salvajes, siempre va a ser una emoción y la razón para levantarse de la cama en las mañanas.
Yo recién estoy empezando a conocerla. Estoy empezando a dejarla ser y hacer lo suyo. Yo simplemente soy parte del viaje. Todo lo que puedo hacer es desear que le entregue contento a mi corazón. Y cuando no lo haga, cuando se ponga de mal humor y me la haga pasar mal... bueno, supongo que tendré que aguantar y recordar que tampoco es fácil para ella. Pero tengo que aprender de alguna forma, verdad? Tengo que ocurrir. Tengo que ser enfrentado con problemas y compromisos, para poder crecer. Igual que una severa pero amorosa madre, la Incertidumbre no va a quedarse quieta mientras vos no hacés nada on tu vida. Va a hacerte entender. Va a ayudarte a crecer. Incluso si le duele más a ella que a vos, lo va a hacer.

I'm reading Jon Krakauer's book, "Into the Wild". For those who never heard about it, it's the story of the well-known adventurer, risk-taker and legendary Chris McCandless. His legend also inspired a movie directed by Sean Penn, and a less-known documental, but the book is something else. Somehow, the narration goes deeper. It gets you thinking. Half-way through it I almost packed up all my stuff and went away forever to escape civilization forever and ever and start living a new life of hitchhiking and adventures on the road.
But then again, I could never do that.
Why? Well, mainly because I have no intention what-so-ever of going over to the Alaskan bush and freeze my ass out and kill animals with a shotgun so I can feedmyself. But actually, I could never do that because I know I'm SCARED.
Yeah, I know, we're all scared. But I mean, alone-outdoorsy situations have always given me the creeps. I remember this one time, 2 summers ago, when I had travelled to a distant, middle-of-the-mountains little town called Iruya, in Argentina's northern area. My friends and I were hiking through a gorge towards another town, a 3 hour hike that prooved to much for my smoker's lungs, so I let them go and decided to just rest my sore feet on the little stream and just chill before going back to town. But then I got itchy, and I noticed a steep pile of stones which zig-zagged into a narrow corridor through the stone wall next to me. Next thing I knew, I was climbing through that pile of stones and entering the gap in the rocks, making my way up through an open tunnel and feeling kind of a high, something inside of me telling me to just keep going, up, up, up, just to see if I could reach the top.
Halfway through, I turned around to get a view and almost fell down, since I hadn't noticed how high up I was. I managed to seat on a big round stone and just stared at everything around me. I don't know how high I was, but I had spent at least 20 minutes climbing so it felt like a million feet. I looked back to the top of the gorge, then down again, and wasted another 20 minutes worrying about how the hell was I gonna get down from there. No cell reception, nobody around. I was alone. I wanted nothing more than to be on safe, plain ground again, but I also wanted to see the top of the gorge. And then, the safety and quietness of the way down was more powerful than the uncertainty and mystery of the way up.
So I didn't make it. I chickened out.
After a few deep breaths and a lot dizzyness, I started the terrifying way down, jumping down from rocks more than 2mts high at times. All the way down I felt calmer and calmer, safer, less anxious. But it didn't feel good. I kept looking back, drowning in regret, trying to fight it back with made-up reasons of why it had been a stupid idea anyway. But still, I thought: Why didn't I go through with it? What was waiting for me at the top of the mountain? What feelings could've been born out of prooving I could DO IT? I guess I'll never know. And that kind of sucks.
Taken on a greater scheme, I think this is something that people experience quite often. It might not be a steep climb full of dangerous falling rocks, but how many times in life do we start to climb the mountain but get cold-feet halfway through? And how often do we find it too hard, and convince ourselves that we don't really want it? But deep down we know. We always know.
Clearly I'm not comparing that mild experience to what Chris McCandless did, but I realized I had never thought about that day again until I started reading the book. Guess I just buried that small defeat in the metaphorical box where I keep the things that I don't like about myself and try to ignore. But today I remembered that moment. I guess you can never escape yourself. But I think that, realizing this now, if I had the chance, I give it another shot. Then again, I think I'm already doing it. It's not climbing a mountain just to see how it looks from the top, but it's facing my dream and taking all the possible risks to get it. Maybe I'm not that same scared person anymore. Maybe today I would actually go all the way and have my breath-taking moment at the top of the world.
See, that's what so exciting and beautiful about being alive. You can always try again. You can always screw up and have another go. Because you're never the person that you were, if you're wise. If you can see it, if you can capitalize all your defeats and accept every failure as a Master, there's always another chance. Sometimes you just need the right inspiration. Maybe that's why books are so freaking awesome.
002: Lo que sé sobre el Miedo

Estoy leyendo el libro de Jon Krakauer, "Hacia Rutas Salvajes". Para los que nunca oyeron hablar de él, es la historia del conocido aventurero, tomador de riesgos y leyenda Chris McCandless. Su leyenda también inspiró una película dirigida por Sean Penn, y un menos conocido documental, pero el libro es distinto. De alguna manera, la narración llega más profundo. Te hace pensar. En la mitad del libro casi empaco unas pocas cosas y me voy para siempre a escapar de la civilizción y empezar una vida nueva de hacer dedo y tener aventuras en el camino.
Pero, sé que nunca podría hacer eso.
Por qué? Bueno, principalmente porque no tengo ninguna intención de ir al medio de la tundra de Alaska a congelarme el culo y matar animales con un rifle para poder alimentarme. Pero en realidad, no podría hacerlo porque sé que me da MIEDO.
Sí, lo sé, todos tenemos miedo. Pero me refiero a que las situaciones de estar solo al aire libre siempre me asustaron un poco. Me acuerdo de una vez, hace 2 veranos, que viajé un pueblito distante en el medio de las montañas del norte Argentino llamado Iruya. Mis amigos y yo estábamos caminando por un desfiladero hacia otro pueblito, una caminata de 3 horas que fue demasiado para mis pulmones de fumador, así que los dejé ir y decidí descansar mis pies en un arroyito y relajarla antes de volver al pueblo. Pero después me dieron ganas de moverme, y noté una pila de rocas empinada que serpenteaba hacia entrar por un pasillo angosto dentro de la pared de roca frente a mi. Lo siguiente que supe fue que estaba escalando a través de la pila de rocas y entrando al espacio entre la pared, subiendo por un túnel abierto y sintiéndo una exaltación, algo adentro mío diciéndome que siga subiendo más y más alto, sólo para ver si podía alcanzar la cima.
A mitad de camino, me dí vuelta para ver la vista y casi caigo, porque no había notado lo alto que estaba. Me las arreglé para sentarme en el borde de una piedra redonda y miré a mi alrededor. No sé qué tan alto estaba, pero sé que estuve al menos 20 minutos trepando así que se sentía como mil metros. Miré de vuelta a la cima, abajo de nuevo, y pasé otros 20 minutos más preocupándome por cómo me las iba a arreglar para bajar de ahí. No había recepción de celular, no había nadie, estaba solo. No quería nada más que estar de nuevo en el suelo llano y seguro, pero también quería con todo mi ser llegar a la cima. Y después, la seguridad y la quietud del camino hacia abajo fueron más poderosas que la incertidumbre y el misterio del camino hacia arriba.
Así que no lo hice. Me asusté.
Después de unos suspiros y algo de mareo, empecé la aterradora bajada, saltando a veces desde rocas de 2 metros de alto. Durante todo el camino hacia abajo empecé a sentirme más y más calmo, más seguro, menos ansioso. Pero no se sentía bien. Seguía mirando hacia atrás, ahogándome en arrepentimiento, tratando de combatirlo con razones inventadas de que había sido una idea estúpida igualmente. Pero aún así, pensaba: Por qué no lo hice? Qué estaba esperándome en la cima de la montaña? Qué sensaciones pudieron haber nacido de probarme a mí mismo que PODÍA? Creo que nunca lo sabré. Y eso apesta un poco.
Llevado a un mayor esquema, creo que es algo que mucha gente experimenta a menudo. Puede no ser una escalada empinada llena de piedras que caen, pero cuántas veces en la vida empezamos a trepar la montaña y nos asustamos a mitad de camino? Y qué tan a menudo lo encontramos demasiado difícil, y nos convencemos de que no lo deseamos realmente? Pero en el fondo lo sabemos. Siempre lo sabemos.
Claramente, no estoy comparando esa simple experiencia con lo que hizo Chris McCandless, pero me doy cuenta que nunca había vuelto a pensar en ese día hasta empezar a leer el libro. Creo que había enterrado esa derrota en la cajita metafórica done guardo las cosas que no me gustan de mí mismo y que trato de ignorar. Pero hoy lo recordé. Supongo que no se puede escapar de uno mismo. Pero creo que, dándome cuenta de esto, si tuviera otra oportunidad, lo volvería a intentar. Aunque ahora que lo pienso, tal vez ya lo estoy haciendo. No es trepar una montaña a ver cómo es la vista desde la cima, pero es enfrentar mi sueño y tomar todos los riesgos posibles para alcanzarlo. Tal vez no soy esa misma persona asustada. Tal vez hoy realmente seguiría hasta el final y tendría mi momento sin aliento en la cima del mundo.
Ven, eso es lo emocionante y hermoso de estar vivo. Siempre se puede volver a intentar. Siempre podés arruinarlo todo y tener otra oportunidad. Porque nunca sos la persona que eras, si sos sabio. Si podés verlo, si podés capitalizar todas tus derrotas y aceptar todos los fracasos como Maestros, siempre hay otra oportunidad. A veces sólo necesitas la inspiración correcta. Tal vez es por eso que los libros son tan jodidamente geniales.
